I accidentally formatted a USB drive or SD card

Ця стаття поки що доступна лише англійською мовою.

Formatting a USB drive or SD card can make all of its files appear to disappear at once.

That does not automatically mean every file is unrecoverable.

Microsoft's Windows File Recovery tool specifically supports recovery attempts after a disk has been formatted. [R1]

The most important rule is:

Stop using the formatted device and do not write new files to it.

Do not format the device again

If Windows, a camera, or another device offers to format the card or USB drive again, cancel that operation while the old files still matter.

Microsoft explains that deleted or lost data can remain recoverable until the storage space is reused. New writes can overwrite that space and reduce the chance of recovery. [R1]

That means you should not:

If it is a full-size SD card with a physical lock switch, write protection can prevent files from being added, changed, or removed while the card is locked. [R3]

Was it a quick format?

Windows distinguishes Quick Format from other formatting operations.

Microsoft documents that Quick Format deletes the file table and root directory of a previously formatted volume and does not perform a sector-by-sector scan for bad areas. [R2]

That is important because a formatted file system no longer has its normal directory information, even though recovery software may still be able to locate remaining data.

Do not assume that a quick format guarantees recovery. Files may still have been overwritten before or after the format.

Use Windows File Recovery

Microsoft provides Windows File Recovery, a command-line utility for recovering lost files from local storage, including external drives and USB devices. [R1]

For a formatted device, Microsoft recommends Extensive mode.

This is also the required recovery mode for non-NTFS file systems such as FAT and exFAT, which Microsoft lists as common on SD cards and flash or USB drives. [R1]

The general command structure is:

winfr source-drive: destination-drive: /extensive

Filters can then narrow the search by filename, path, file extension, or wildcard. [R1]

Recover to a different drive

The recovery destination must be different from the source drive. [R1]

If the formatted SD card is E:, for example, recovered files should go to the PC's internal drive or another external drive — not back onto E:.

Writing recovered files onto the source device could overwrite other data that has not yet been recovered.

Make sure the destination has enough free space before starting.

What if the original folders and filenames are gone?

After formatting, recovery may not preserve the original folder structure or filenames.

Windows File Recovery includes recovery methods that can search using file-system information or file signatures. Microsoft documents Signature mode as a method that identifies files from their headers and supports all file-system types. [R1]

For photos, documents, and other recognizable file types, this can still produce usable files even when directory information has been lost.

The recovered files must then be checked individually.

Is recovery guaranteed?

No.

Formatting changes storage metadata, and later writes can overwrite file contents. If the data has been overwritten, software cannot recreate the original bytes from the formatted device.

A recovered filename or thumbnail is also not proof that the file is intact.

Open important recovered files and verify that photos display completely, documents open normally, and videos can be played through the expected duration.

What should I do now?

  1. Stop using the USB drive or SD card.
  2. Do not format it again.
  3. If practical, prevent accidental writes to the source.
  4. Prepare a different drive with enough free space for recovered files.
  5. Use Windows File Recovery in Extensive mode.
  6. Search first for the file types or folders that matter most.
  7. Verify recovered files before declaring the recovery successful.

If the files are irreplaceable, preserving the original device is more important than repeatedly experimenting with repair or formatting tools.
